This will be the regular column for the Doctors of the Hyperbaric Medical Centre (HMC), they can answer your medical queries or update you with tips to remain safe and healthy when diving. Let us start this very first column by introducing the HMC and its doctors.Operating since March 1993 Sharm el Sheikh’s HMC has become a cherished institution amongst the local community. Under the leadership of Director Dr Adel Taher; Consultant in Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine and Assistant Director Dr Ahmed Sakr the centre has, to date (September 2009), successfully treated over 1000 cases of DCI.
Dr Adel, a diving instructor at the time, was the inspiration behind the multi-place and multi-lock chamber being opened in Sharm as he saw the need for a facility to specialize in diving related accidents. The chamber was built in the USA, funded by USAID and sent here under the ownership of the Egyptian Ministry of tourism.
The HMC and its Doctors deals with conditions from Cerebral Arterial Gas Embolism to fish stings and the common ear complaints. Their patients are just as varied as the nationalities of divers in Sharm and include most of the local diving professionals as well as many members of the local Bedouin community. Dr Adel has an impressive CV, as well as the Director of the HMC he is also the director of DAN-Egypt, a member of the UHMS and both him and Dr Ahmed are
members of the EUBS. Further a field they have a sister chamber in Dahab, run by Dr Haikal Abd Al Tawab next to the Dahabeya Hotel. On behalf of Red Sea Diving College we would like to thank the chamber for standing by 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
So if you have any medical queries please let us know at jochen@redseacollege.com.
The most interesting one will be discussed in our next issue.

span class=”style12″>From Kate Moss in London to Amber Valetta in the USA, one celebrity hairdresser never imagined that his latest hair styling triumph would be at Red Sea Diving College, settling a long running bet between two instructors!
Long term guests Paul and his agent Julian were enjoying a well earned break from their jet setting lifestyle, when his skills were called upon in the most unusual setting… the Red Sea Diving College confined area in Sharm.
Started over 3 months ago over a few after work drinks (as these things always seem to!), Pete and Duncan, two long term Sharmers and Red Sea Diving College staff, struck a deal that neither would cut his hair before the other. After weeks of protests from other staff as well as the respective girlfriend and wife, there was no sign of an end and both were looking a little dishevelled.
A combination of increasing temperature and the quick thinking of a girlfriend led to there being a rather satisfying end in sight. Cue the hairdressing guest! So, after his final days diving, the salon was set up and the busman’s holiday began. With a surprising amount of hair available, the boys were styled and coiffed to within an inch of their lives. How Paul got to where he is now was immediately evident, creating amazing styles with a very limited set of tools, the highlight being the scissors from the workshop!
Each style had to stand up to a tough underwater photo-shoot, and both more than met that challenge.
As a reward for their (co-arced) participation, Paul restored them both to their previous appearances, although there were rumours of money being offered to leave them in a rather different state! Red Sea Diving College would like to thank Paul and Julian, who runs Julian Watson Agency, for restoring the staff to their former glory, and the huge amount of laughter it produced for all concerned.

We have recently been made aware of plans to build a huge power plant in Nuweiba, an area 200km from Sharm and 50km from Taba.
The plant will have a detrimental effect on the area as a whole, destroying reefs and marine life in the local area, an effect that will spread to other areas over time.
Please help us to encourage the local government and other supporting parties to with-hold permission until full investigations into the plans can be made by signing the petition.
We (and the fish) thank you!
