One of our groups had a fantastic encounter with a Thresher at the back of Jackson reef in Tiran yesterday.

And the hat-trick was rounded off at the London International Dive Show where we received news that Project Aware had awarded us their Environmental Achievement Award for the second year running.

| A third award this year for Red Sea Diving College in Sharm el Sheikh has delighted the management and staff at the College in Sharm el Sheikh.First was the Defenders of the Sea Award from Hepca (Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association). |

Next came the Dive Centre of the Year Award and then news came through at the London International Dive Show that the College had been awarded an Environmental Achievement Award 2007 from Project AWARE. They are the only centre in the middle-east to receive this honour. |

Douglas Nash, Director of Project AWARE and Vice President of PADI presented the award to Managing Director of Red Sea Diving College, Guy Haywood, at a short press conference at the dive show .

The award was given in recognition of the work carried out by staff at the College in three main areas:
• An attempt - in conjunction with the expert help of the Ras Mohammed national park staff – to rehabilitate an injured Hawksbill turtle. Staff at the College used the focus on the turtle to try and develop a wider awareness concerning the marine environment.

Clean up Earth week
• The development of an artificial reef in Naama Bay designed partially to take pressure away from the much dived nearby natural reef.
• Thirdly, College staff has been involved in numerous clean-up projects in the Sharm area and Taba throughout 2007.
Plans for this year include a coral restoration project in partnership with the staff at the Ras Mohammed national park. There are also plans to begin environmental campaigns within the Russian diving community.The Project AWARE Foundation honors dive operators around the world who display commitment and excellence in their efforts to protect underwater environments within business operations and their community.Project AWARE Foundation Chairman, Dr. Drew Richardson recognizes the importance of the scuba diving community taking its part on protection of global ecosystems. “The Environment Achievement Award is about rewarding vision, excellence and pursuit of conservation. More importantly, this award ensures the enjoyment of underwater environments for future generations,” states Richardson.

| Amr Ali, Managing Director of HEPCA recently explained, at a press conference in Sharm, that the award had been given in recognition of the important environmental work carried out throughout 2007 by staff at the College.HEPCA is a leading NGO - Non Governmental Organisation – working in the field of marine and land conservation. Founded in 1992 by 12 members representing the diving community of the Red Sea, HEPCA is actively working towards the goal of protecting and preserving the natural resources of the Red Sea and Egypt. |

Amr presented the award to Alain Sobol, CEO of the College at a ceremony at the dive centre in Naama Bay.
Red Sea Diving College projects in 2007 included:
• An attempt to rehabilitate an injured hawksbill turtle in conjunction with staff at the Ras Mohammed National Park.
• Building an artificial reef in Naama Bay and developing the “Adopt a Pot” scheme whereby all the proceeds go to the Ras Mohammed National Park fund for future projects. The artificial reef has started to take pressure of the nearby natural reef.
• An on-going Naama Bay jetty clean-up programme and regular participation in all Project Aware clean-up days.

A College spokesperson explained to us that “we are very proud in receiving this award and it is testimony to the hard work, dedication and commitment of all the staff at Red Sea Diving College”.
The environmental work of the dive centre will continue throughout 2008. There are plans to launch some environmental initiatives within the Russian diving community and there are also plans being developed to begin a coral re-grafting project - under the direction of Dr Mohammed Salem, Chief Marine Biologist from the Ras Mohammed National Park. There are also plans to link up with the Project Aware Coral Watch scheme. In Taba Heights, Red Sea Waterworld - a sister company of Red Sea Diving College - will continue its work with HEPCA in renewing the fixed moorings that prevent damage to coral.
Amr Ali from HEPCA explained that he hoped to see more dive centres active in the kind of work that the College has been carrying out.
