Dolphin Birth Witnessed in Sharm
Guests on board one of the Red Sea Diving College liveaboards, the luxurious VIPONE, were recently treated to an incredibly rare sight.
Red Sea Diving College Special Offer Summer 2007
The lucky group witnessed the birth of a baby dolphin. Early one morning, a group of dolphins were spotted by Mahmoud, the boats skipper, some way off Ras Ghazlani, a dive site not far from Sharm El Sheikh.
As the skipper moved the boat closer to allow guests a better view, it appeared that several dolphins seemed to be providing a protective guard around one of the larger ones.
When a flush of blood was noticed, the first thought was that the main Dolphin had been injured. However, the guests watched in awe as it became clear that the dolphin was giving birth. The guide insured that all the guests resisted the temptation of entering the water and the boat was kept at a comfortable distance while the new mother was holding her new born calf out of the water while it took its first breaths. The protective barrier of dolphins continued to lend support and the new mother wasted no time tending to her pride and joy who was soon swimming freely under her watchful eye.

All VIPs’ guests, the guide and the boats crew were extremely moved by the birth and the events that followed. Vlado, the guide, commented “We all watched on in amazement, we couldn’t stop. At a time like this you get closer to nature and somehow it changes you. After 30 minutes we moved on in a strange silence, everyone happily reflecting in their own way”. VIP’s skipper said “In thirty years at sea I have never seen anything like it before and will remember it always”.
