Sharm el Sheikh First Artificial Reef
As the winter starts to draw in (well the Sharm version of winter!), the diving continues in earnest. With quieter sights and boats, we are welcoming more and more of you wanting that winter get-away! The water is still a lovely 25 degrees, although only one mad instructor is still not in a suit. We`ve had a busy few months, working hard with the local community in our efforts to give something back to the underwater world. Read on……

Name that fish

Monique, one of our instructors at Red Sea Waterworld, recently sent us this picture and asked for an identification! After careful research, we were surprised to discover that is actually a ‘toad fish” or for the Latin speakers among us a “Thalassothia cirrhosus”. According to our staff fish bible “Red Sea Reef Guide” by Helmut Debelius, this rare fish was first spotted in 1871, when only one specimen was recorded at Quseir, Egypt after an 8 year study on Red Sea fish and coral. The next sighting was in 1954, when one was caught in a trap in Elat in the Gulf of Aqaba. So, we may have only the third spotting of this specimen!! Even the Lochness monster has been seen more!!

Project Aware Clean up Day

Staff and guests alike were again proud to carry out a clean up of the Sinai area on Project AWARE Clean up day.
All divers that day were made aware of the International event and were encouraged to participate, leading by example were of course the Red Sea Diving College and Waterworld staff. Clean-ups were done on all the sites that were dived that day, from Ras Mohammed National Park all the way to the Straits of Tiran, meaning a total of 12 sites in Sharm and 4 in Taba were given special treatment that day! Along side the normal coral and fish spotting, rubbish spotting was given special priority throughout the days diving. All those who participated throughout the day were awarded a certificate of recognition for their efforts, and by the end of the day, approximately 150 certificates were awarded!
The final haul amounted to an estimated 700kg of rubbish from both centres, all of which was sent to be recycled!

DIVE Show

It was great to be at the Dive Show at the NEC in October, where we took up our normal position in the PADI Village. Red Sea Diving College, Red Sea Waterworld and VIP One were all represented. It was great to see so many familiar faces, and be assured that all greetings to staff not in attendance were duly passed on when we returned. We also picked up an award from Project AWARE for continuing support of the marine environment. For those of you who couldn’t make it, don`t worry, we will be at the Dive Show in Excel early next year!

Night Diving

You either love it or hate it, but this time of year is the best to get your torches out and night dive. The College can arrange night dives most evenings, from a boat or shore. The confined area is especially suitable for night dives, due to the shallow conditions, calm waters and excellent visibility. At night, the urchins climb onto the reef plates, the lion fish come out to hunt, clown fish sleep on their sides! We even have a mimic octopus which enjoys spending his evenings transforming himself from a sea snake to a lionfish!
Spanish Dancers are often spotted as well as squid and seahorses. And because its winter, you can do a night dive and still have that first beer in your hand by 6.30!!
2 Dive Community ensure animal welfare
The established bar and eatery Little Budda in Naama recently introduced Shark Fin Soup to its new menu. However, a topic being so close to the communities heart, it wasn’t long until their insensitivity was highlighted. James Tunney of Red Sea Diving College said of the incident “The little Buddha has since its opening been a favourite of Red Sea Diving College staff and guests alike, So I was very surprised to see shark Fin soup on their new menu. The following day I brought this to the attention of the Little Buddha management, on realizing their oversight they removed it immediately and without question. The Little Buddha's quick response shows an understanding of the local dive communities feelings and a willingness to help in Marine preservation.
Fancy something different – Rebreather Courses
Andy Wilson has joined the college staff as our new rebreather instructor. Andy has been diving for 14 years and teaching technical courses for over 7 years. He specialises in Rebreather training. Andy was pleased to complete his first Megalodon Course from the College in November, as the only Megalodon Instructor in the Middle East and Russia!
